Planning and Design Guidelines for Small Learning Communities

During the 2004-2005 school year, the Los Angeles Unified School District approved policies and procedures governing the development and implementation of Small Learning Communities in middle schools and high schools. At the same time, the Facilities Services Division prepared the Planning and Design Guidelines for Small Learning Communities to establish and sustain consistent representation of requirements and standards to all members of the Design Team.

The document presents design guidelines and criteria for planning, design, and technical development of new schools and conversion of existing facilities. The guide is crafted to assist design team members in developing buildings and campuses that support Small Learning Communities (SLCs). Collectively, the information supplied within the document should be used to guide the design development process.
