Non-Academic and Modular Facilities Planning

This section reduces spending on leased properties by utilizing existing District-owned properties to satisfy the space needs of the District. These savings may then be reallocated by the District for educational purposes. Modular Facilities Planning provides portable facilities to satisfy immediate needs for classroom, office, and restroom space.

Non-Academic Facilities Planning Unit

Non-Academic Facilities Planning performs the essential function of providing the District with in-house planning expertise to maximize the efficient use of non-academic office space owned and leased by the District. District frees up funds that may be allocated for educational purposes by maximizing savings achieved using in-house planning of space utilization. Non-Academic Facilities Planning also reduces the District.s spending on leased properties by leveraging existing properties to satisfy the space needs of the District.

The Non-Academic Facilities Planning Unit plans the allocation of over five million square feet of non-academic space. This Unit works proactively with Central Administration and the Local Regions in reviewing and validating office, storage and other requirements, and presents recommendations and detailed business analyses for approval.

Modular Facilities Planning Unit

This Unit coordinates the placement and installation of single-story portable buildings District-wide. Single-story portable buildings primarily support repair and modernization projects requiring student interim housing, e.g., modernizations, structural upgrades, and asbestos abatement as well as the District.s need for additional classrooms in response to enrollment growth programs.

The following guiding principles will be used for future planning and placement of portable classroom buildings:

  • Placement consistent with demographic data
  • Placement to support LAUSD educational plan and academic achievement (e.g., right-sizing of campuses - Small Schools, Small Learning Communities, New Tech High Schools and Science Labs)
  • Portables to be placed per code and DSA certified
  • Portables meet all health and safety requirements
  • Best use of LAUSD resources
  • Maintain flexibility
  • Consider new construction relief
