"LAUSD must strive to be the most
sustainable and environmentally-friendly urban large school district in the Country..."
LAUSD Board of Education -- Green LAUSD Resolution 8/23/2007
Sustainability means "the capacity to endure".
In practice this means we act in ways that preserve and protect our natural resources and the health of our air, water, and soil - so that our planet can endure.
In 2007, the Board of Education passed a Resolution entitled Green LAUSD, which established the above overarching goal and directed the Superintendent to establish a "Green" accountability system outlining measurable outcomes for Sustainability. In response, the District created Sustainability Initiatives, a division of Facilities Services Division.
Embracing the "green school" concept and building healthy and sustainable schools positively impacts not only our students' learning experience but the health of the entire city. The District's goal is not only to incorporate sustainability into our building and business practices, but to make it an integral part of the students' experience. Whether headed to the workforce or to secondary education, we want students to be prepared for the emerging green economy. Our students can change the City.
The Mission of Sustainability Initiatives is to develop programs and policies which guide the District towards achieving the goals the envisioned by "Green LAUSD".
