(Los Angeles, CA) Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Board Vice President Yolie Flores today joined elected officials, the community and special guests to break ground on South Region High School #7.

“Today’s groundbreaking marks a new chapter for the Huntington Park community. A beautiful new state-of-the-art high school and upgraded park will replace what was once a community nuisance and waste pile of rubble,” Board Vice President Flores said. “With the completion of this much needed and much deserved new school, Huntington Park High will finally be relieved of campus crowding and multi-track calendars. This signifies yet another critical investment in the learning environments of our students, and that is truly a cause to celebrate.”

The new school, located in Huntington Park, will provide overcrowding relief to Huntington Park High School and is scheduled to open for the 2012-2013 school year.

“I am very excited about the construction of this new school. It represents the commitment of our community to ensure that every student gets the best education possible,” Local District 6 Superintendent Martin Galindo said. “It will provide a wonderful learning environment so we can help every student become college prepared and career ready. This is what our students need and deserve as we prepare them for the future.”

The 1,620-seat high school will consist of three Small Schools, each including classrooms, science labs and administration offices. Shared campus facilities will include performing arts classrooms, a library, a multipurpose room, two gymnasiums, two swimming pools, a food service area and lunch shelter, administration support services and underground parking.

Part of the new high school will be built on the site of the former Westside Park. LAUSD, in collaboration with the City of Huntington Park, will build a new beautiful park – the Raul R. Perez Memorial Park – as a replacement. Construction of the park will begin in late Summer 2010 and will be completed by Spring 2011.

“Crowded year round campuses like Huntington Park High School are receiving the relief they need as our New School Construction Program delivers on the 131 new schools necessary for every student to have a safe and healthy neighborhood school,” LAUSD Acting Director of Construction Neil Gamble said.

South Los Angeles Area New High School #7 is part of the LAUSD’s $19.5 Billion New School Construction and Modernization Program. The goal of this Program is to provide every student with the opportunity to attend a safe and healthy neighborhood school operating on a traditional, two-semester calendar.
